In the 10 years (and counting) span that Grace Potter & The Nocturnals have been together, they’ve managed to grow as a band and explore several arenas of the modern rock canon rather successfully. The band started when Potter was approached by drummer Matt Burr after performing some of her own folk songs at a campus coffee place. The band then developed a bit of a jammy sound in their early years, but kept some rootsy rock and folk influences up their sleeves. After signing to Hollywood Records in 2005, they’ve since collaborated with the likes of T-Bone Burnett and, well … Kenny Chesney, while fleshing out their Americana-influenced modern rock sounds. Their self-titled album in 2010 was commercially successful yet felt “samey” to some critics, but they’re back now with a solid new record, The Lion the Beast the Beat, and a live album (released on RSD). The new record is a great addition to their growing discography, with Potter finding new ways to showcase her voice (deservedly, of course) and the band employing new flourishes to their sound. “Never Go Back” (see video below) is a standout track, and hopefully indicative of a new direction for the group.
