Jenny Owen Youngs with Hank and Cupcake and Sam Bradley / Brillobox / Sunday 09.18.11 / 9:00 PM / $10
Words by Jim
We’re in the thick of now, folks. Autumn is fast approaching. Football season is now here (I’m watching the Steeler’s game as I write this. Bonus points, right?). Brendan and I have hashed out the next couple months of ticket giveaways and holy moly, we have officially entered the fall tour madness, where artists try and hit the North East one last time before winter sets in. We’re excited to start off the madness with one of our favorite indie pop songstresses, Jenny Owen Youngs. That’s right, you know the drill, we’re giving away TWO FREE tickets (courtesy of Opus One Productions) to see her at Brillobox next Sunday. More about JOY and details inside.

We’re happy to say that Youngs has graced our fine city a few times now and definitely deserves the strong following she has. If you aren’t familiar with her, well, you should be. How can you not be into a indie girl with the initials JOY? Seriously. Ms. Youngs does a hell of a job crafting some really fine indie pop tunes, adding flare and flavor that’s all her own. She’s smart. She’s clever. She’s just really good. I first became familiar with her way back when in college when a certain curse word ridden song popped up on a mix CD I had acquired. Her song “Fuck Was I” really blew me away with it’s witty lyrics, self-deprecating nature, and terrific voice. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who liked this song as it was featured on the Showtime series, Weeds. Sweet, right?
Her self released Batten the Hatches was then re-released thanks to the whole Weeds thing, and in 2009 she released the terrific Transmitter Failure. She’s currently touring behind a bunch of new songs (some available on Bandcamp, including an honest cover of “Since U Been Gone”). Frankly, the girl has a tremendous ear for covering exotic pop songs and transforming them into her owen, clever, restrained, pop folk songs. It’s pretty awesome (e.g. the Nelly cover below).
So Ms. Youngs will be appearing this coming Sunday at the lovely Brillobox. Definitely an awesome way to start the work week. Her support for the show is Hank and Cupcakes, a mysteriously catchy Brookyln based duo. Also supporting is Canadian roots rock Sam Bradley.
No doubt, this is going to be an awesome time at an awesome venue. If this sounds like something you could get into, leave a note on our Facebook wall, @ us on Twitter (with the hashtag #JOYpgh), or send me an email to enter the contest!! We’ll pick a winner (at random) on Friday afternoon and let you know who the lucky guy/gal is (gotta be 21 to enter)! .
