Kathryn Calder / Are You My Mother? / New Album Release
So I have a familiar voice for you, but with a new twist. Kathryn Calder,of Immaculate Machines and The New Pornographers fame, is releasing her first solo album entitled, “Are You My Mother?” I’ve thought long and hard about how to describe her album and all I can think of is, bug zapper. Hear me out, Kathryn starts by hitting you with soft whispers and catchy song writing that has a whole new vibe to it as compared to her respective bands’ stuff. It lures you in, you want more, your mind goes blank, all you know is that you need more, and ZAP! You just got hit with “Castor and Pollux,” “Arrow,” and “If You Only Knew.” Guess what? You’ve just become a Kathryn Calder fan. Seriously, it’s musical abuse and I love it.
Kathryn Calder – If You Only Knew
Kathryn Calder – Castor and Pollux
The album revolves around the passing of her mother and the myriad of feelings she went through while it was happening. The album is not full of sorrow and sadness, but it is a celebration of life. About how we all begin and eventually we’ll all end. And hopefully the time spent between we get to live it up, have a blast, and experience all that the world has to offer. She recorded the entire album in her childhood home in B.C., Canada, which is pretty sweet. Moral of the story…listen to the LP, love life, and watch out for the bright blue light that’s buzzing in front of you.
The album is available from her website right now for download, the official release and hard media will be available August 10th. No tour dates scheduled yet, but as soon as we find out we’ll be letting you know where you can check her out.
Typically reserved for complete album reviews, but I’m throwing down a rating for this one. I do what I want!
